As a recruiter/search consultant, LinkedIn has become indispensible in the search for interesting talent for my client companies. Several times during the course of a week, I will search through profiles looking for a specific skill set or background.
One of the cardinal rules of getting found on LinkedIn is to create a compelling headline. Ask any LI expert and they will tell you that a remarkable headline is one of theop three must dos for your profile.
During a recent search, I found a fabulous example of a headline done right. This one even made me laugh out loud - twice. His heading read “Consumer Goods Executive, Slow Treadmill Runner.” Wow, another slow treadmill runner! I was compelled to read more.
He followed up his headline with “Past positions have included:
Consumer Packaged Goods executive (suit guy)
Board of Directors (dark blue suit guy)
M&A (assets - liabilities = equity guy)
Entrepreneurial investor (probability x impact = risk guy)
Turn-arounds (stick-to-itiveness guy)…”
The list went on with 10-12 different work roles (guys). Absolutely genius!
Most professionals who take the time to post a profile on Linkedin want to be found. Whether it is to find a new job, become ‘known’ in an industry or keep up-to-date with social networking. Your headline and even the first paragraph are key ingredients to a noticeable profile. The “Slow Treadmill Runner” has a lesson for all of us. Make your headline interesting and people will want to meet and connect with you.
