Director Product Research Contract Manufacturing

The Director is primarily accountable for the translation of customer needs to specific product features and functionality across the entire organization and customer base. Manages personnel, products, processes and specifications within the Research & Development areas.

Essential Duties:

  • Opportunity Identification and Qualification

o   Continually generates ideas for new products from external and internal sources.

  • Identifies potential opportunities through regular external meetings and phone calls with clients and experts, industry meetings, trade publications, and internet research.
  • Facilitates communication of client input through staff interaction and promotes idea generation internally from both company offices and the sales team.

o   Creates, screens and market tests product concepts.

o   Asses direct and indirect competition.

  • Product Development

o   Develops product descriptions, models and prototypes.

o   Refines concepts through client interactions.

o   Partners with Operations and Sales to develop and implement launch plan.

o   Transitions product knowledge and documentation to product line manager.

o   Research new innovations for materials, formulas, equipment or manufacturing tasks.

  • Engineering/Process Development

o   Evaluate and select proper equipment applications for manufacturing processes.

o   Create process routings and alternate routings for all production products.

o   Assure production standards are developed for all processes through time studies.

o   Responsible for creating, finalizing and maintaining the product specifications and bill-of-material for all products.

  • Department Management

o   Manage efforts of product development team by planning, prioritizing, and establishing goals.

o   Track and report status of all projects.

o   Responsible for owning the specifications and design of the product, the performance, the costing and consistency for all performance tiers on all production lines.

o   Makes decisions regarding work processes or operational plans and schedules in order to achieve departmental objectives.

o   Communicate with associates to resolve specific issues with regards to products, processes and services.

o   Monitor and help establish standards for products, product specifications, and processes.

o   Assure the existence of a Master Manufacturing Record that effectively defines process parameters and specifications.

o   Actively review and implement corrective action measures.

o   Creates immediate to long-range plans to carry out objectives established by the Senior Leadership Team; develops a budget for the department to meet organizational goals; forecasts future departmental needs including human and material resources and capital expenditures.

o   Facilitates others’ participation in the continuous improvement program; investigates and solves problems that impact work processes and personnel within or across units or departments.

o   Fosters a diverse workplace that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential in pursuit of organizational objectives. Creates an entrepreneurial environment.

o   Responsible for facilitating training of team members in coordination with Human Resources.

o   Assist with other projects or duties as assigned.

 

Requirements & Qualifications:

o   Bachelor of Science or higher in food science, chemistry, biochemistry or related discipline preferred.

o   3 or more years of experience in product development, preferably in a GMP regulated environment.

o   Working knowledge of laboratory methods and technical documentation.

o   Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to contribute solutions on multiple ongoing projects.

o   Ability to be creative, proactive and think outside the box.

o   Proficient with Microsoft Office; strong verbal and written communication skills.

o   Function efficiently in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to meet strict deadlines.

o   Strong motivation, level disposition, work ethic and organizational skills.
